Sustainable Built Environment Society (SBES)
Head of the Department:
Welcome to the Sustainable Built Environment Society (SBES)
Welcome to the Sustainable Built Environment Society (SBES), a global and interdisciplinary platform committed to transforming the way built environments are designed, constructed, managed, and regenerated. Grounded in the principles of environmental responsibility, economic viability, and social equity, SBES brings together engineers, architects, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to advance a greener and more resilient future for infrastructure and construction worldwide. The society is led by James Olabode Bamidele Rotimi, Professor in the School of Built Environment at Massey University, whose international expertise and academic leadership guide SBES’s strategic direction and global collaborations.
At SBES, we promote knowledge-driven innovation and collaborative action in sustainable construction, urban development, and resource-efficient building management. Our initiatives span cutting-edge research funding, training programs, green certification systems, and real-world project implementation. Whether it’s enabling net-zero energy buildings, developing bio-based construction materials, or influencing urban sustainability policies, SBES acts as a catalyst for impact and excellence across sectors.
With a strong emphasis on education, SBES also nurtures the next generation of sustainability leaders through scholarships, fellowships, and international competitions. We actively engage with governments, academic institutions, NGOs, and private enterprises to drive sustainable transformation at both grassroots and global scales. Join us in reimagining infrastructure not just as physical structures—but as ecosystems that harmonize with the environment, empower communities, and endure across generations.

Our Mission
Objectives
- Advance interdisciplinary research in sustainable design, construction technologies, lifecycle analysis, and infrastructure resilience.
- Promote education and certification in green construction practices, project management, and sustainable urban planning.
- Provide a global forum for knowledge exchange among academics, engineers, architects, urbanists, and environmental policymakers.
- Facilitate industry-academic collaborations for applied research, pilot projects, and standards development.
- Support climate-resilient infrastructure strategies aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (especially SDG 9, 11, and 13).
Partnerships and Collaborations
- Universities and research centers for joint academic programs, research funding, and fellowships.
- Government agencies to develop sustainability frameworks, building codes, and incentive programs.
- Private sector firms in architecture, engineering, and real estate for field testing innovations and pilot projects.
- International bodies and NGOs for policy advocacy, community impact projects, and knowledge dissemination.
- Current collaborations include joint workshops with leading institutes, technical advisory support for sustainable housing missions, and partnership-based innovation challenges with urban planning departments.
Industry Projects and Initiatives
- Live lab projects demonstrating regenerative construction techniques and circular economy models.
- Sustainability audits for government buildings, educational campuses, and smart city infrastructure.
- Green building rating and verification tools tailored to regional needs.
- Community-driven eco-housing projects focused on low-carbon materials and inclusive design.
- Digital twin integrations for lifecycle sustainability tracking in construction assets.
- We work across continents, bridging design thinking, compliance engineering, and carbon intelligence into scalable action.
